We had the manuals. We could not use them when it mattered.
The problem was never finding survival information. It was pulling the right page with no signal, in a hurry, on the device already in your pocket.
01 · The problem
Over several years we collected field manuals, emergency medicine references, government preparedness guides, wilderness skills books. Thousands of pages. The kind of library people who take self-reliance seriously build up over time.
Knowledge was never scarce. Access was. The moment you actually need the bleach-to-water ratio is the moment the tower is down, the power is out, and Google is gone.
Twenty minutes. Three PDFs. One bleach-to-water ratio.
In an emergency, that delay is the whole problem.
Cloud AI already solves search. It also dies when the tower dies, which is exactly when you need it. So we asked a narrower question: can a model run entirely on the device, be forced to answer only from a closed library, and show you the page it used?
It can.
02 · The rule
Answer from the library and cite it. Or say nothing.
That one rule is the spine of the product. Ask never answers from memory. It retrieves from the guides on the phone, writes from what it found, and shows the source. If the library does not cover it, Ask says so instead of guessing. Silence is safer than a confident wrong answer when someone is bleeding.

February 2026 · The desktop build
A 7B model and a 15 GB library on a laptop.
It proved the rule. Cited answers, no network. It also proved something else: when the signal is gone, you are not holding a laptop.

September 2026 · The phone
iPhone. Three nouns.
Library, Field, and Ask, on the device you already carry. Everything a phone could not do honestly was cut. The laptop build stays in the workshop. It is not the product. The phone is.

A phone can do three things honestly.

- FieldLeave a card. Routes as text. Last known. Compass, light and signal. Stop. Mark. Stay. Signal.
- SuppliesWater, food, and meds in. Days you can last out. Under Settings until you have a shelf.
- Local onlyNo account. No analytics. No cloud answers. Three network calls, all started by you.
Went
- Live mapsNo tiles, no live navigation. Routes are directions you saved with signal, kept as text. Roads can change.
- Mesh and radio networkingNot on the phone. A radio reference is. A network is not.
- The laptop as the productIt proved the rule. It is not what ships.
- The crisis dashboardNo 0 days of water. No Action required. Home opens on four doors and stays quiet until there is something to say.

05 · Who it is for
People who take self-reliance seriously enough to keep answers on the phone before they need them. Hikers, overlanders, rural households, anyone who loses signal. A dead trail and a dark house. First aid and water work in both places. No power is a home job. Lost is a field job.
We are not selling fear. People prepare for storms, remote travel, and outages. Wanting the answer on your phone before you need it is reasonable. That is the whole idea.
